How to Choose a Printer - Blue Hill Press

When choosing a printer, consider their experience, reputation, and commitment to quality and service.  Is price an issue?  Absolutely, but not the most important issue.  Look for a printer who pays attention to detail, who has expertise with design software, who has solid, well cultivated knowledge of the printing process, and who has a thorough understanding of postal regulations.

SERVICE

A good printer has knowledgeable staff to guide you.  They can assist you with paper and ink selections and recommend a cost-effective approach to produce your project.  Check their reputation for delivering on time.  Do you feel comfortable working with them?  Do they return your calls promptly?  Are they professional and courteous?

CAPABILITY

Some printers offer a full range of services, while other printers provide to a specific niche.  Determine what you need, and select a printer who is positioned to meet that need.  If your project requires printing and mailing, consider the benefit of choosing a printer with in-house mailing services.

QUALITY

Make sure that the quality produced by the printer you are considering meets your standard.  Ask for samples of products they have printed that are similar to yours.  Inquire if they have the equipment and technology necessary to produce the quality you require – computer-to-plate workflow; state-of-the-art digital proofing system; modern, high-speed digital print engines, and multi-unit offset presses for full-color printing.  Most importantly, ask about the experience of their production team, their commitment to quality, and the processes in place to assure constancy of quality.

PRICE

The worst way to choose a printer is to base your decision exclusively on price. The old adage, “You get what you pay for,” certainly applies here.  If you want to get a quality product, printed by conscientious people who take pride in their work, then you should be prepared to pay for it.  The lowest price is not always the best value.
